Step 1: Deployment
- The COOL questionnaire can be used for measuring the coolness of a product by replacing "This device is" with something appropriate, for example "This website is", "This application is", etc.
- It should be administered on a 7-point scale, and ideally the items should be randomized
- The three control items for overall coolness can be used to better understand what the individual scores for each quality mean, for example a product might not be perceived as cool because it scores low on rebelliousness.
- The COOL questionnaire can be used for Free but please refer to our work.
Step 2: Data analysis
- Collect your data (you may use any of the downloadable material that exists below and suits you)
- Average the relevant items (4 items for desirability, 4 items for rebelliousness, 4 items for usability, 4 items for hedonic quality, 2 items for classic aesthetics, and 3 control items for overall coolness)
- Create single scores for all the qualities
- Plot the data and extract meaning for the product's coolness
- Alternatively, you may use our Excel Analysis File to do this process automatically. You can download the file HERE
Example:
100 participants evaluated a mobile device in relation to its coolness. The average score for desirability was 4.5, for rebelliousness 2.7, for usability 5.6, for hedonic quality 5.3, for classic aesthetics 3.5 and their average answer on the control items was 3.4. Thus, we have an indication that even though the participants perceived the mobile device as usable, it was not perceived as really cool because it was not rebellious enough and its physical form was perceived as too classic. Other methods can be used next (for example interviews), to have an in depth understanding on which aspects of the mobile device are responsible for these scores. For example, its brand might be considered as conservative, or its design might be too similar to other mobile devices. |
